This is a positively mouthwatering weekend in NYC, so instead of doing a recipe or restaurant related post, I’m going to shoot you a quick rundown of places you should be chowing down:
Tickets are still available for many of the festival’s tastiest events! Hob knob with celebrity chefs, munch delicious food, and lean a lot about food, cooking, and dining culture! Head to Modern Day Jewish Food to discover why the food of my people is headed away from Gefilte Fish and towards high end fare, Paula Deen’s family brunch loaded with Southern eats and treats, or the Grand Tasting. This event is the mac-daddy of the entire festival, a 6 hour fair of food, celebrities, and products. Get your fill of booze and high end bites, as well as tons of samples to tote home! Expect to see Tyler Florence, Bobby Flay, Adam Richman, and more at this gustatory extravaganza.
Amateur Chili Cookoff, Hosted By Lucky 777 and Jimmy’s No. 43
From the press release: “On Sunday October 14th from 1-3pm, chili fanatics will descend onto Jimmy’s No. 43 in the East Village for a knock down, drag out chili showdown to find out who has the best amateur chili recipe across the five boroughs. Ten competitors will vie for the chili crown, gift certificates and bragging rights and attendees will get to chow down on as much chili as they can handle!” Tickets are $20 at the door and include all the chili and cornbread you can eat! Beer and wine will be available for purchase, and all proceeds to go G-d’s Love We Deliver. Chili AND a tax write-off ticket…you don’t have to ask me twice!
For those of you who prefer superheros to super chefs, the Comic Con is undoubtedly your home base this weekend. But don’t worry…just cause you are having fun doesn’t mean you can’t eat, too! Enter Marja Vongerichten’s pop up Korean restaurant, BibiFresh, located right in the Javits Center, this weekend only. From the press release: “Co-Founders Marja Vongerichten (host of PBS’ “The Kimchi Chronicles”) and John-Paul Lee will be on hand serving comic aficionados and food fans alike. The menu will feature the signature Korean dish, BiBimBap, with a choice of spicy pork, chicken, and tofu ($8.95) and BiBiGreens[...].” Marja is the wife of famous chef Jean-Georges, and a great chef and foodie in her own right. The offerings might be limited, but they are sure to be top notch and WAY better than the bag of potato chips you were planning on eating.
So, there you have it, NYC. Have at ‘em and get fat this weekend!
